What is the History of the Snickerdoodle?
Snickerdoodles are a cookie made with butter or oil, sugar, and flour and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Eggs may also sometimes be an ingredient, with cream of tartar and baking soda to leaven the dough. Snickerdoodles’ signature look is a cracked surface and can be either crisp or soft, depending on its ingredients.

It is said snickerdoodles are probably German in origin. The name is a variant of the German word Schneckennudel, a Palatine variety of schnecken. It could be possible that the name is simply a silly word with no particular meaning. Coming over from a New England tradition of whimsical cookie names. The term “snicker” had appeared in the English language by 1836, while “doodle” had emerged by the early 17th century. The actual word ‘snickerdoodle itself’ was first recorded in 1889.

The snickerdoodle is a universal cookie in the United States but is relatively not heard of in other countries. This cookie is an everyday type cookie of the Mennonite and Amish communities. It also was a favorite dessert of the Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley.
In the last five years or less, the Snickerdoodle cookie has transformed into a popular flavor of desserts, sweets, and desserts. Larger brands have taken the simple dessert and turned them into their original items.
Just like, General Mills created a Snickerdoodle flavored Chex Mix Muddy Buddies to their snack line. Back in 2014 holiday season, Dunkin’ Donuts unveiled a Snickerdoodle Cookie Latte on their holiday menu. Also, Snickerdoodle latte, Nestlé Coffee-Mate, introduced their take on the cookie in the form of coffee creamer. Brands such as Braum’s Ice Cream and Prairie Farms have dedicated an ice cream flavor to the famous cookie.
Can You Make Snickerdoodles Without Cream of Tartar?
Actually yes you can make snickerdoodles without cream of tartar. The only difference is that it doesn’t bring quite the acidic flavor to the cookie as the cream of tartar would. With these changes, the only true role the cream of tartar would play is to add the iconic acidic flavor.

Chocolate Snickerdoodles Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted sweet cream butter softened
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 2 ¾ cup flour
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ tsp cream of tartar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Using a large bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, and sugar until combined and creamy.
- Beat in the eggs, 1 at a time until combined.
- Beat in the vanilla.
- Using another large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, cream of tartar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until combined.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined and a dough forms.
- Using a small bowl, whisk together the 1 C of sugar and 1 tsp of cinnamon.
- Using a small ice cream scooper, scoop out about 1 ½ tbsp of cookie dough.
- Roll into a ball in your hands.
- Coat cookie dough ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Place onto a cookie tray.
- Place into the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set and the middle looks soft.
- Allow cooling completely before enjoying them.
